Happy Month of August!
The Board of Directors has started a Yard of the Month project. Each month a home will be selected by the committee. The home chosen will then have a sign posted in their front yard for the month stating YARD OF THE MONTH. The Board hopes this will prompt owners to keep up their landscaping in hopes of one month receiving recognition for having a beautiful landscaped front yard.
August Yard of the Month recipient is
1951 Southern Dunes Blvd.

Congratulations!
CURB APPEAL
Did you know that having a beautifully manicured landscape adds both beauty and value to your home? Whether you’re updating your landscaping for your personal enjoyment, or cleaning up the look for a quick sale. Here are a few steps you can follow to ensure your home makes a great impression.
· *Trimming trees, shrubs and plants helps to establish a clean look. Particularly if they have been in place for more than a few years and have grown untended.
· * Weed removal and routine lawn mowing are key to achieving a manicured lawn. Removing weeds can be quite tricky. The best way to control weeds is to get them while they’re young. A few simple pulls “here and there” can put you on the right track to a controlled lawn. Also make sure your sprinkler timer is coordinated with the watering schedule for your neighborhood.
· * Adding color to your garden gives your landscape a little extra pizzazz. Choosing the right plants can be a decision all your own or coupled with a landscaper or a quick visit to your local nursery. Explaining your style and color tastes should provide enough to identify the right plants for you.
· *A light layer of natural, bio-degradable mulch in landscape beds and tree rings should be added to not only provide visual appeal but to aid in water retention and weed suppression. You can find many tips and tricks on line or by using previously mentioned resources like landscapers and nurseries.
To ensure your home is “picture perfect” without any bumps in the road, a DRC application is needed before any major exterior changes in your landscape are done

| | | What is a Hurricane? This is a storm with a sustained wind force of 74 mph or greater. These storms are traced from the time they become a tropical wave until they develop into a hurricane. Hurricane season is June 1st through November 30th.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office offers these safety tips to citizens of Polk County when preparing for a hurricane or other natural disaster:
Do I leave or do I stay? If you leave, have preparations made in advance. Do not wait!!! The roads become a parking lot. For every four (4) times you evacuate, three (3) times will just be a short vacation.
Before you leave your home: - Turn off:
a. water b. electricity c. gas
- Fill freezer with containers of water.
- Have plenty of cash on hand.
- Make sure important papers go with you (keep these in a water tight container or ziploc bag).
- Have an up-to-date inventory of possessions for insurance purposes with descriptions, models, and serial numbers of items. Include purchase price and date (Operation ID). Secure a video tape or take photographs of all possessions and keep in safe deposit box. (Take this along with you when you leave.)
If you stay: - Know location and routes to Red Cross shelters.
- Secure home and grounds (tape windows, tie down or store yard items, etc.)
- If in a mobile home community, evacuate to shelter immediately whenever a Hurricane Warning or Disaster is declared.
- Turn freezer to lowest setting and fill it with containers of water so it will stay colder longer.
- Keep a two-week supply of non-perishable foods, needing little or no preparation. Don't forget non-electrical can opener and emergency cooking equipment, i.e. grill, Coleman stove (for outside cooking).
- Have at least one (1) gallon of water per person per day.
- Secure important papers; labeled ziploc bags, currency in small denominations only.
- Have emergency cash available. ATM's will not be working.
- Have flashlights and fresh batteries with replacements.
- Have portable battery operated radios and/or televisions.
- Scour bathtub and rinse with household bleach, then with water. Fill the tub with water for use in the toilet.
- Make sure your vehicle is full of fuel.
- Have all medications for a full two weeks; include a first-aid kit.
Be prepared to be completely self-sufficient for at least two weeks. After Disaster: - If evacuated, delay return until authorized.
- Seek medical help at Red Cross stations or hospitals.
- Do not go into disaster areas.
- Drive, only if necessary.
- Beware of snakes and insects moving to high ground.
- Avoid all structurally damaged buildings.
- Guard against spoiled food.
- Notify insurance agent of damage.
- Make temporary repairs to protect against further damage and looting.
- Beware of unscrupulous opportunities: i.e. price gouging. Polk County has a gouging ordinance. Jail time for price gouging is 6 months and $500.00 for each offense.
- Curfew ordinance starts in any local emergency.
- Do not wire emergency generator directly into house, draw power directly from generator.
Red Cross Shelters: - Opened as needed in emergency area(s). There are 41 primary shelters in Polk County.
- Bring special foods, i.e. baby food, diabetics food, etc.
- Bedding.
- Medicine for 2 weeks.
- Personal items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, books, puzzles, etc.)
- Flashlights, extra batteries.
- Portable radio.
- Food and drink will be provided.
- Items NOT permitted in shelter: guns, alcohol, pets.
- Potential capacity of 40,000-50,000 persons. 102 shelters are available.
Special Needs Program: - Temporary emergency facility capable of providing medical or nursing care which does not necessitate a hospital.
- Transportation assistance available to: Special needs shelter, public shelter, or nursing home/hospital.
- Pre-registration in the program is preferred by contacting Emergency Management office (863)534-5600.

Display Your House Numbers Properly
Posting the address numbers on the outside of your home correctly could prevent a delayed response by emergency services and could potentially save the lives of you and your family.

Sandbag InformationSandbags will redirect storm water and debris flows away from homes and other structures, provided the sandbags are properly filled and maintained. Sandbags usually last for only one year. Consult your local environmental protection department before disposing of used sandbags. Sandbags exposed to contaminated floodwaters may pose an environmental hazard and require special handling. Forest Hills Lane, Dunes Court, Waterview Loop, Gulf Vue Drive and Clubhouse Cove
WILL BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2017
Re: Tree trimming requests for The Estates Subdivision / Asphalting
Community Roads
Dear Estates residents
The Southern Dunes Master
Association has inspected the community roads in The Estates subdivision. The
following roads will be re-asphalted in the next few weeks: Forest Hills Lane, Dunes Court, Waterview
Loop, Gulf Vue Drive and Clubhouse Cove.
Properties with trees in the front
of their property should trim low branches; trucks will raise the beds to pour
material and may break branches causing damages to your and others properties,
vehicles and/or may cause injuries. The Association nor the Asphalting company
will be responsible for any issues, damages and/or etc. arising from trees or
branches that have not been trimmed properly.
No vehicles will be allowed to park on the streets during
this time; vehicles may be subject to towing at the owners expense.
Southern Dunes Master Association will not be responsible for vehicles towed
out of the community.
Your assistance and cooperation
is appreciated and expected.
If you have any questions please
contact the HOA office at 863-419-0642 or via email at

If you are a pet owner in Southern Dunes, we ask that you are considerate of others living in the community.
As per the Rules and Regulations for the Southern Dunes Master HOA ArtIX Sec1.N Animals & ArtIX Sec1.G Nuisances - all residents must comply by having your pets kept on a leash at all times. If your dog leaves a "gift" while out walking in the neighborhood including Association, Golf Course or other residents property; please pick up after your pets and dispose of accordingly. It is unsanitary, leaves a foul odor and unsightly.
Polk County Animal Control Ordinance No. 10-001 Sec.11 - Companion Animals Creating Nuisance also has regulations regarding these issues and more. Those residents that do not comply may be subject to local sanctions as well.

Attention Landscapers & Tree Removal Companies
When trimming trees, shrubs and/or removing any plant material;
DO NOT LEAVE THE DEBRIS ON THE CURB FOR TRASH DAY PICK UP. REMOVE THE DEBRIS THE SAME DAY.
The trash removal company does not remove all of the debris and we are left with dead leaves and broken branches that end up in the storm drains.
Once in the storm drains the plant material builds up and backs up the water in the streets causing flooding during heavy rain fall.
Companies that do not remove their debris will not be allowed to work within the community.
